Meu Heya program of Lezma Foundation
English conversation, from the US to Brazil

US teens. Brazilian classrooms. Real English, live.

Meu Hey trains American high school volunteers to lead small-group English conversation sessions for students in Brazilian public schools and community programs. A local teacher runs the room. Our volunteers bring the conversation.

Football, food, and your weekend

  1. Who is your favorite team? Why?
  2. What do you eat on Sunday with your family?
  3. Ask your partner: "What did you do last weekend?"
  4. Describe your city in three words.

Why conversation

Brazilian public schools teach English, but students rarely get to speak it.

55%

of public school English teachers in Brazil have no specific training to teach the subject.

British Council Observatory for English Teaching in Brazil, 2020
65%

of those teachers also teach other subjects, and most teach English to more than six classes a week.

6th

grade is when most public school students first study English. Private school students start years earlier.

How a session works

Forty minutes, one shared screen, a teacher in the room.

  1. The class connects

A Brazilian classroom joins a Meu Hey video session from one laptop or phone, shown on a TV or projector.

  2. Two volunteers lead

A pair of trained US volunteers runs that week's conversation card with a group of four to six students.

  3. Adults stay present

The Brazilian teacher stays in the room and a Meu Hey adult host stays in the call the whole time.

  4. Hours are verified

Lezma Foundation confirms attendance and issues signed service-hour records to each volunteer.

MEUHEY
About the name
Meu rei Hey

In Bahia, people greet everyone, friends and strangers alike, as meu rei: "my king." It is the warmest hello in Brazil. We swapped one word for the first word of English most students learn. Say it "MEH-oo hey."

Status: pilot in planning

Our first pilot runs in 2027.

We are now talking with Brazilian schools and community organizations, and building our volunteer training. Join the interest list and we will contact you when sessions open. We will publish what the pilot teaches us, including what does not work.

For US high school students

Volunteer once a week. Help a Brazilian student speak English for the first time.

Lead small-group conversation sessions online, earn documented service hours, and work with a classroom in another country. No teaching experience required. We train you.

Who we're looking for

  • High school students, ages 15 to 18, in the United States.
  • Fluent English speakers who are patient and like talking with people.
  • Portuguese is a plus, not a requirement. Students who speak Portuguese are especially welcome.
  • Six weeks of commitment: one 40-minute session per week, plus about 10 minutes of prep.
  • A parent or guardian signs the consent form before your first session.

What you get

  • Two hours of training on leading conversation, working with beginners, and our safety rules.
  • Ready-made conversation cards for every session.
  • Signed service-hour records from Lezma Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Check your school's or program's rules on which hours count.
  • A volunteer partner for every session. You never lead alone.

Session times

Brasília runs 2 hours ahead of US Eastern Time from November to March, and 1 hour ahead the rest of the year. Central Time is one hour earlier than Eastern, Pacific three. Planned windows:

Our safety rules

These rules protect you and the students you work with. Breaking one ends your participation.

  • All sessions happen in Meu Hey's video room, with a teacher and a Meu Hey adult host present.
  • No private messages with students, on any app.
  • No sharing phone numbers, social media, or personal email.
  • No photos or recordings of sessions.
  • Report anything that makes you uncomfortable to the Meu Hey host right away.

We only use this to contact you and your parent about the program. We never share it.

About

Meu Hey is a program of Lezma Foundation.

Lezma Foundation is a Texas nonprofit corporation based in Cedar Park, recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3). We started with a focus on hunger in Brazil and have refocused on education through Meu Hey, where online tools and volunteers let a small organization reach students directly.

How we work

  • We publish what our pilots measure, including results that disappoint us.
  • We use AI to prepare materials and handle administration. People lead every session.
  • We partner with Brazilian institutions instead of recruiting children directly.
  • Donations fund volunteer training, conversation materials, and technology.

Donations are processed by Zeffy. Lezma Foundation is a 501(c)(3); gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
